2 months of cycling my tank and still no nitrite only ammoina?

got a 10gal with a betta and a platy been cycling for about 2 months now and only ammoina in my tank, Im doing daily water changes to keep it low so my fish wont die, is that stoping the cycle? what range of ammoina should my tank have whats too much ammoina and whats too lil, I tried the stuf you put in the tank to add the bacteria that makes nitrate and all that did was give me brown slim algy lookin stuf, I have cycled 3 tanks before in about a month with no problems I dont get it what would stop me from getting nitrite I havent changed the water for 2 days now and the ammoina is at 1 maby 1.5 before I was keeping it at .25 maby .50 to keep it safer for my fish, could that be why I never get nitrite? not enough ammoina? Im gona try in keep it in the 1.50 to 2.50 rang now and see if that helps, I think maby I was never letting it build up enough ammoina?
